FINAL SCORE: HURT 51, Alamo City 3
Special thanks to This is Texas Rugby for attending the match and the following write-up:
“Houston, TX – The temperature at Rice’s Rugby Pitch never got above 42. The drizzle stopped for only a few minutes a couple of times. The wind blew steadily. Overall, perfect rugby weather.
Alamo City got it’s scoring in early with a Penalty Kick from Texas St alumni Kevin Kemp just a minute after the kickoff. Then, HURT took eight minutes to turn on their offense. When they did, it was a simple 8-man take from the base of a scrum that sparked the motion.
In a wet and cold match that should have seen very few passes past first receiver, flyhalf Ryan Marshall skipped a pass to big Dennis Walker who looked like he was going to take on Alamo City all by himself. Just before contact, Walker dished out out to fullback Gareth Gibson who had a 2-on-1 overload with wing Marshall Brown in support. Twenty meters out, Gibson fed Brown into space and Brown rumbled to score in the corner.
Alamo City never waned in the defensive efforts, but when the ball was not in anyone’s possession, they seemed hesitant to pick up and go. HURT displayed no qualms about falling on loose ball to secure possession. Better-than-expected ball-handling in less-than-desirable conditions, strong work by the flankers and tight five at the breakdowns, and hard running the 8-man and the midfield that bunched up the defense made up HURT’s gameplan and they executed with perfect effort for a solid, 9-try win of 51-3.”
